Jessica Beinecke’s peppy charm has garnered her a devoted following 7,000 miles away from her hometown in Ohio. The 24-year-old fluent Mandarin speaker hosts a web show titled “OMG Meiyu” that teaches American slang to Chinese viewers curious about speech oddities like “muffin top” or “sweating bullets.”
The spunky blonde had been hosting an online travel video segment targeted towards a young Chinese audience when a short clip explaining eye boogers racked up 1.5 million views. Follow-up videos only increased Jessica’s popularity, making her something of an internet celebrity in China.
“American language is quite different from what we learn,” a fan shared with the Washington Post. “We learn how to write papers about marketing. She teaches us how the young guys talk. Yeah, she’s cool.”
