Innovation on the cheap: lessons from NASA

Despite the popular belief that NASA is a huge waste of government money, it actually accounts for less than one percent of the U.S. budget. In the past few decades, the funding has continually shrunk. Needless to say, NASA learned to innovate for less. Working Knowledge offers a few lessons from NASA’s playbook, primarily open innovation challenges, how to pull them off, and some helpful resources. For instance, here’s just one action point:
- Consider open innovation methods such as external challenges as a cost-efficient way to spur innovation.
