Banning cameras in delivery rooms

If Pittsburgh is an example of a growing trend (and, let’s face it, that’s a statement few would like to agree with unless you have Super Bowl aspirations), then recording the birth of your baby for posterity in all its glorious (or gory) detail may soon be a thing of the past.
In one hospital, no pictures or video is allowed to be taken until after the birth and that is only if the father is stationed overseas, while another allows only still photography. One of the area’s most popular birthing hospitals, Magee Women’s Hospital, allows the support person to take video with the doctor having the final call as to whether or not the camera rolls.
“The technology that’s available today, with smart phones and laptops, it would be something really difficult to police even if we said we weren’t going to allow it anymore,” Susan Pedaline, a nurse at Magee Women’s Hospital, said.
An excellent point, yet hospitals are becoming more and more leery of mistakes that could land them in court being innocently caught on film by excited parents-to-be. So if you have your heart set on preserving those unique memories, be sure to ask about hospital policy before making any commitments.
