Are stroke deaths a valid way to grade hospitals?

The percentage of stroke patients who die within a 30-day period may not be a valid measure of a hospital’s ability to provide quality care.

"The role of a physician is to . . . ultimately, respect their desires and do what is in the best interest of the patient," says University of Rochester neurologist Adam Kelly.

"Unfortunately, this method of calculating a hospital’s quality of stroke care appears to contradict this patient-centered approach."
