| | --- Reply above this line to comment on this post --- When one lives in a city like Los Angeles, New York or Chicago, it’s expected that driving to work is going to be a major pain, and less traffic is supposed to be one of the bonuses to living in a smaller city. If that city happens to be Pittsburgh, though, steer clear of a commute using the Fort Pitt tunnels; it’s the worst congested stretch of highway outside of LA and NYC. Coming in at number nine, according to international firm INRIX, the inexplicable additional time it takes to traverse the problem spot adds up to thirty-six hours ever year for those unlucky commuters, but little can be done thanks to the unique topography and financial issues affecting what money is available for much-needed repairs. The strain on the public transportation budget and planned cuts only guarantee the problem will worsen. So, the next time you fly in for a meeting downtown or to catch a Steelers game, take the earlier flight and make sure to leave extra time; you’ll need it.
