Citing dwindling rubber supplies, a scientist says that isoprene—a gas from plants— could be a synthetic alternative for tire production.

"Rubber prices are rising, and the competition for developing synthetic rubber is heating up," says Michigan State University molecular biologist Tom Sharkey. "This should help lead to effective ways to engineer bio-isoprene and ultimately keep costs low using this renewable alternative source for rubber production."
