What you see is apparently what you get, at least when it comes to distinguishing sounds such as ‘v’ and ‘b’, as Professor Lawrence Rosenblum of the University of California, Riverside explains in this clip from the BBC. The trick is called the McGurk effect, and even once you realize what’s going on, it’s still impossible to override what your eyes are telling the ears to hear.
