Plenty of cookbooks say they offer recipes you can whip up from ingredients you already have, but none is quite so resourceful as “From the Big House to Your House” by six female inmates looking for that home-cooked experience without an oven, knives or any chance of running out to the store for those last few ingredients for the next fifty years or so.
If your mouth starts to water at the mention of tuna nachos or Frito pie, the book is available online, the perfect present for that college student on a skimpy budget who needs a reminder to stay on the straight and narrow. All proceeds are being donated to the publisher, the Justice Institute of Seattle, since its authors are barred from making a profit while incarcerated. You can’t put a cage around their creativity, though.
