"Cash Mobs" support locally owned businesses

Shopping acts of seeming randomness that benefit struggling stores in the community. That’s the idea behind Cash Mobs, an altruistic play on the overplayed phenomenon of flash mobs.

Cash mobs organize in a similar way to flash mobs, connecting on social networking sites and through word of mouth, but instead of busting into choreographed dance numbers, the group spends money at a locally owned business. Each cash mobber commits to spending at least $20 and members are encouraged to engage in post-mob action socializing at a local watering hole.

The cash mobs not only bring an influx of cash to local businesses, but also expose mobbers to neighborhood retailers they may pass over without much thought. Businesses that have been targets for cash mobs say that the experience has helped not only on the day of the mobbing, but also after as they grow relationships with those involved.

“It’s not just about the money that comes in that day, it’s about a real small business that doesn’t have a lot of money and a marketing budget. They get a little earned media coverage they wouldn’t normally get that allows them to establish themselves a little bit more,” cash mobs founder Chris Smith said.
