Happy 100th birthday, Lucy!

It’s hard to believe today that the Queen Bee of comedy was kicked out of acting school (which she attended with Bette Davis) after being told she didn’t have a chance as a performer, but rejection only spurred the irrepressible nature of Lucille Ball to prove them all wrong.

Lucille Ball ran the media gamut, beginning her career as a model then moving to the silver screen playing B movie roles (for which she was nicknamed “Queen B”). “I Love Lucy” was born of the radio program “My Favorite Husband” in which Ball also starred, and it was around this time that Desilu Productions was born with Ball and husband Desi Arnaz at the helm. When Arnaz sold his shares to Lucy following their divorce in 1960 she became the first woman to head a TV production company. Star Trek fans will also be interested to know that she also had a hand in making Gene Roddenberry’s galaxy-hopping dreams come true.

Not a bad resume for a woman who’s most famous for being a dizzy redhead, eh? Happy Birthday, Lucy!
