In a country where matters of life and death are routinely determined by memories – and often mistakenly so – it’s high time we take a harder look at how reliable science says our tickers are when it comes to recalling the “truth.”
Experts say there are four major myths about memory it’s time to forget:
1. Memory works like a video camera, recording the world around us onto a mental tape that we can later replay.
2. An unexpected occurrence is likely to be noticed—even when people’s attention is elsewhere.
3. Hypnosis can improve memory—especially when assisting a witness in recalling details associated with a crime.
4. Amnesia sufferers usually cannot remember their identity or name.
Good luck convincing that friend of the flawless memory they could be wrong, but the humbly forgetful now have science on their side…if they remember to use it.
